| Baby Shower Thank You Letter July 2007 |
Dear Family and Friends, At seventeen weeks into our pregnancy our amniocentesis revealed that our daughter Laci Rose who is due on September 14, 2007, would be born with Down Syndrome. We realize this is shocking news but we made the decision the day we learned of our pregnancy to face any challenges that may arise and feel blessed with the gift we have been given. Laci is a baby first and foremost and we will love her with all our hearts. We wanted to give you time to adjust to the news so you would not feel the need to have an immediate response. We want everyone to celebrate our baby like any other. Since we received the diagnosis, we have been educating ourselves through books and the Internet as we hope many of you will do as part of your continued support. We agree this is hard news to hear and some of you will not know how to react or what to say but we want you to know that it is ok to talk about it, as this is not a secret or a shameful thing. If you would like to talk about it that is fine but if you do not want to mention it that is fine too. We are praying that she will have a mild form of DS and limited health problems. We did have a Pediatric Cardiologist perform and Echo on her heart as 50% of down children are born with a defective heart, which requires surgery shortly after birth. We are pleased to announce Laci’s heart is perfectly healthy and normal. She is growing like any other child and kicking up a storm and we are taking this as an indication that she is a strong baby and is as anxious to be here as we are for her arrival. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Kalene and Jonathan Gage |
| Laci Rose Is Here! |
Thirty six weeks into our pregnancy after a routine ultrasound, it was decided that Laci Rose was ready to join us on the outside. She was born by C-section at Hackensack Hospital on August 17th, 2007 at 8:38pm. She weighed a healthy 6lbs., 7.5 oz. She was 19 inches tall. She had several doctors visit her, a geneticist, a cardiologist, and her pediatrician. They all gave her a clean bill of health. Dr. Fred C. Hirschenfang, medical director from the Judy Center for Down Syndrome at Hackensack Hospital said that because her heart was so healthy developmentally she most likely will be very high functioning. She exhibits very few of the Down Syndrome traits. Laci is very active and eats well. She is already gaining weight. We welcome your thoughts and prayers and invite you to visit her guest book and meet her in person. We love her very much and know you will too. We know she will be a very special person and God will watch over her. |
